A 39-year-old Nigerian man, Brian Ogbo, has been jailed for three and a half years after killing his 82-year-old grandmother during a severe psychotic episode in Ireland.

Ogbo was sentenced by Cork Circuit Criminal Court after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of Stella Nnadi at the family home in Carrigaline, County Cork, on Feb. 23, 2025.

The court heard Ogbo had moved from Nigeria to Ireland in December 2024 to reunite with his mother, Ruby Ogbo, and his grandmother. Ruby, a social worker, told the court she had repeatedly tried to secure anti-psychotic medication for her son, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2017.

Prosecutors said Ogbo missed two monthly injections while his mother struggled with Ireland’s mental health system.

Judge Sinead Behan said the defendant was “in the obvious throes of a psychotic episode” when the attack happened. Detective Garda Tom Delaney told the court Ogbo had paced around the house for hours, destroyed parts of the kitchen, and eaten all the food before the incident.

Ogbo’s guilty plea to manslaughter, rather than murder, was accepted on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
